The day started with coffee from Tim Hortons care of my delivery boy. While in the elevator, Scott met a Cavoodle called Miso – the same name as one we know in Melbourne.

A small overnight bag was packed and Scott drove the car to Port Hope.

It was a very small town with industry on the lake shore and the Main Street was being completely renovated … so lots of construction.

We asked about where to have lunch and Olympus Burgers were recommended as the best. So I ordered the Olympus Poutine and Scott ordered the Ares burger. They were very tasty and washed down with beer.

We decided that we would not stay here and a town called Cobourg looked promising. We didn’t have to travel far to find the lovely region of Cobourg and we decided to investigate for somewhere to stay. After checking out the Main Street, we made our way towards the lake and found that the King George Inn had rooms we could stay in.

The King George Inn is the old gaol/jail and the decor is very British. There were no prison cell rooms available so we booked a Queen room each but they were not ready so we wandered down to the beach.

There were many people taking advantage of the lovely weather at the beach and along the walk showed a harbour full of yachts and a holiday park full of RVs. The area also felt like the place you would retire to because of its beauty and infrastructure.

It was time for a drink and a snack, so the Cucina Urbana looked inviting. The Sangria was very refreshing and the Shrimp Diavolo with Classic Brushetta were delicious too!

We checked into our rooms while Scott had a rest and I went back to the Main Street and contributed to the local economy.

Scott had found a restaurant which had good reviews not far from our accommodation so we walked the 2 minute walk to George & Orange. We were lucky to get a table outside without a reservation and ordered drinks – a Manhattan for me and a white wine for Scott. From the menu we chose the Pico de Gallo & Guacamole, Panko Breaded Coconut Shrimp (we wanted oysters but sadly they were not available) plus we shared a Spicy Crispy Chicken Sandwich which was a burger in our eyes.

On the way down the path a black squirrel ran in front of us and we were taking photos while a couple of locals walked past – I told them that we only have koalas!

We then wandered down to the lake shore and enjoyed watching the geese and ducks in their element. The cool breeze was perfect for enjoying the outdoors.

The sun was setting so we retired to our rooms.

We had a 12noon checkout so we took our time to pack and finalise our affairs. I decided to order breakfast. When my omelette arrived, it was enormous- served with breakfast potatoes and extra toast. I ate what I could and it was very tasty.

Once checked out, we walked to the Port Authority on 8th street from our hotel which took about 25 minutes. There was a bus preparing to leave but we could not pay by phone like in the subway. We needed to buy a ticket in their office or as we did, scan the bar code and buy the tickets online. It was a straight forward process and completed within the 5 minutes before departure. Tickets for seniors pay half the price for adults. The bus was air conditioned and quite comfortable.

The bus ride took under the expected hour timeframe to Newark so we were making good time. When we went to check in, we were told that we could catch an earlier flight and we accepted as Scott thought that we were flying at that time anyway, hence the early trek to the airport. I was not asked to pay for my carry on this time, go figure!

Security was easy as there were very few people here but my bag was swept into the checking zone. I forgot that I could not bring the rest of my duty free vodka back to Canada on my carry on… duh!

We settled in to the Usual Times bar in the airport and ordered drinks and food. We only ordered drinks and food until the nonchalance and disorganisation of the service. We had our drinks and went to the Belgian Bar but realised that we did not have time, so we just had beers.

I bought a bottle of Smirnoff White duty free (in case there was still a strike in Toronto of the local liquor stores). Once purchased, I wasn’t allowed to walk the 20 feet back to the Belgian Bar with my sealed bottle and was asked to return and show my receipt when we again made our way to the gate. When the time came to collect my duty free, she actually escorted me down to the gate to ensure that I went to the right place.

The weather was cloudy and thunderstorms were about so the flight had some turbulence to the extent that service was stopped just as they got to our row.

The landing was smooth at Billy Bishop airport and customs was fuss free… mainly electronic except for the final check.

We followed the escalators down to a tunnel which is a walkway under the canal and then elevators took us up to the other side of the canal where there was a car park for us to meet the Uber. It was peak hour traffic so we asked to be dropped off a few blocks before our destination as it was easier to walk than wait in traffic.

We walked past the Gloria Cocktail bar and noticed Escargot on the menu. Our bags were small enough to tuck under a table and we decided to have dinner here.

We started with Pear Martinis and ordered Escargot to share, French Onion soup for me and Scott chose the Gloria Burger.

It was Martini Happy Hour so we also ordered Dirty martinis.

The food was delicious and the experience was enhanced by watching a couple of women sitting outside having cocktails with their cute dog -Theo the labradoodle!

We continued to walk the 2 remaining blocks home and unpacked and set about settling in for the night.

New York was fabulous and now only a memory!

The day started out drizzly and we purchased some umbrellas from the hotel shop and embarked on our latest adventure.

First destination was Lincoln Square where John Lennon was tragically killed.

This meant that we walked parallel with Central Park until this point and then entered the park to see the Imagine memorial. There were many people milling around but we managed to get ahead of the pack for my photo.

Onward through the park we spotted some squirrels and stopped to watch their antics.

Central Park is enormous and our next destination was the MET (Metropolitan Museum for Art). It was drizzly but pleasantly cooler for this part of our walk.

We walked a bit too far so we did see the Guggenheim Museum building and finally found the MET.

The MET building was impressive and we were keen to see the Sleeping Beauties Reawakening Fashion exhibition which Scott had bought tickets for …….. yesterday….. apparently this happens often and it was not a problem to change to today without extra cost.

We queued up outside a row of Rodin sculptures and any artworks. The fashions were impressive and inspirational.

We then viewed the European paintings including Monet, Cezanne and Degas to name a few.

Once we had reached our cultural limit we made our way to find a meal which took us down Park Avenue, a very nice area!

We found Luke’s Bar and Grill on 3rd Avenue and noticed That it was patronised by the locals. We chose fish tacos, meatballs, guacamole and salsa plus beers. The meal was finished with cocktails we call espresso martinis but were on the menu as Cafè Noir Martini.

We entered the subway at Lexington and 77th, changed at Grand Central, alighted at Bowling Green and then walked to the Whitehall Terminal to catch the Staten Island ferry past the Statue of Liberty. This ferry was free and was used by many people as we made our way across the waterway. Everyone has to alight at Staten Island so we explored a little with the intention to catch the next ferry – they leave every 30 minutes.

There was an outlet precinct at this end so we looked around and made some purchases. Then decided to taste our first chilli dogs New York style. They were OK.

We took the ferry back and caught the subway to Grand Central where we alighted and explored the terminal. It was a spectacular building with impressive stonework.

The station also housed an Oyster bar where we decided to have dinner. We had a range of natural local oysters and finished with a clam chowder each. The oyster crackers served with the soup was disappointing and we found out that the sourdough they usually serve it with had run out.

It was only about a 20 minute walk home so we made our way back through Times Square and its craziness! It was very warm and humid so the air conditioned lobby in our hotel was a nice place to wind down, enjoy a refreshment and look at the view for our last night in New York.

It was a big day so rest was welcome and we return to Toronto tomorrow.

Scott was horrified to find that he had been charged the full amount of money for the disputed Tuktuk ride which he suspected might happen. He found the local New York Police Department (NYPD) and reported the con to try and get some justice. Do NOT fall for this tourist trap!

Meanwhile, I grabbed a coffee in the lobby to kickstart the day.

We walked with purpose down 5th Avenue to see the sights like the Empire State Building and the Flat Iron.

We then stopped at a Pret A Manger to get some cool drinks and escape the humidity for a while. Looking out of the window revealed the Empire State Building was in sight and just a block away.

Once we got to Greenwich Village, we walked past Joe’s Pizza and met Scott’s friend Scotty at John’s Pizza, the oldest pizza store in New York.

It was nice to be in air conditioned comfort as it was very hot and humid. We chose the Picante pizza, zucchini fries and a house salad! It was not the enormous slices that you see but this place has been host to people like Bruce Springsteen and Jack Black. The food was delicious and the company was Scottish!

We then made our way to a new landmark called The Island at the Hudson River Park. This was developed by reclaiming land and renovating meat packing establishments. We could see across the Hudson River to the other side and enjoyed the views.

Scotty was an excellent tour guide who worked as stage manager for many Broadway musicals. He then led us to the high line of which we could only access a small part of it due to construction happening in both directions. This used to be a railway to deliver goods across the city which has now been turned into a nice walkway for locals and tourists.

Once back down on the streets we walked back to the Madison Square Park, opposite the Flatiron building and decided to catch the Subway to Ground Zero. We used our phones to pay for subway tickets(like we do in Sydney), it is flat rate of $2:90US for each trip. It was noisy until we entered the carriage and welcomed the air conditioning on such a warm humid day.

There was a Westfield Shopping complex across the road from the Ground Zero memorial with an eye catching building which looked like a giant fishbone.

We walked across to the memorial with so many other people, the water feature was not operating but it was somber to see all the names engraved into the stone around the structure. We then decided to make our way back closer to home of which I was grateful for after over 19,000 steps.

We caught the subway again and went back to the hotel and I blogged while Scott and Scotty caught up. I noticed that the artwork in my room is the same as in the rooms at the Melbourne Movenpick Hotel. There were no coffee facilities in the room but I did notice, too late, that you can have a coffee machine delivered on request.

For dinner we decided to eat in our Hotel lobby and take in the Times Square scenery again. The Coney Island Chicken Bites, Beast Burger Sliders plus Spinach and Avocado Dip with flat bread were delicious.

It was a big day so we were happy to retire to our rooms to recuperate.

We had an early start and called an Uber at 6:50am to take us to Billy Bishop Airport for our Porter airlines flight to Newark airport. The check in process included thorough checks that we had our ESTA approvals for entry to the USA. Also I was given the option of having my carry on bag checked in for $49 or $52 if I was taking it on board. We paid the second option so we did not have to wait at baggage.

There were no queues at security so it was easy and we were through to the lounge in no time. Billy Bishop is a small airport comparable in size to the Coffs Coast airport.

Our flight was delayed for an hour due to air traffic control. I checked out the duty free and was able to buy a Tag No 5 Vodka for $24AUD. Bargain!

Our 8:50am flight was finally ready for boarding at 9:30am and we were soon on our way. The plane was a propeller operated model with a 2 by 2 seat configuration.

The onboard service was excellent for the short flight with complimentary chips, almonds or fava bean snacks plus your choice of water, beer, wine or juice. The drinks were served in glasses…no plastic.

There was the usual queuing at Newark airport to get through customs which took about 40 minutes until we were processed and admitted into the USA.

Before we left the airport we needed to eat, I chose an egg, meat and cheese croissant and Scott chose the Italian Croissant. They were ok.

We then caught an Uber through bumper to bumper traffic to our Hotel, the M Social in Times Square. The lobby for this hotel is on the sixth floor and has views down to Times Square and downtown New York.

After some more refreshments and photo taking we had to get to the Stephen Sondheim Theatre to see the musical &Juliet. The 10 minute walk to the theatre took us through a very crowded Times Square. We were seated in the front row of the Mezzanine level and the musical was fabulous.

We then jumped onto one of the touristy tuktuks and were entertained with music and a tour of the streets. It was fun until it was time to pay a ridiculous $500US.

Scott refused to pay that much and challenged the driver that this was excessive, enlisting the help of a police officer to assist with the issue. Beware of tourist traps! This experience soured an otherwise wonderful day.

The day started with coffees from Tim Hortons and then a visit to the local hair salon.

We went to the local supermarket to collect supplies.

Scott wanted to use the blueberries he had in the fridge so there was a cooking frenzy of maple, blueberry and walnut muffins. We had Carrot soup in a jar from the local supermarket as well as some tasty toasties.

As the afternoon wore on, we walked to the lakeside.since it was a Saturday there were people sitting on the beach or in kayaks on the water…. It not that many plus we only saw one swimmer. Ducks, swans and geese share the water with the humans.

Lifeguards have rowing boats here which we suspected was because of the steep drop off from the sand. We settled in the lakeside Sunny Side Cafe and enjoyed some beverages and Med Flatbreads. It was lovely to sit in the fresh air and watch the world go by.

We walked back home (12,000 steps today) along the foreshore and Queen Street.

Must pack for New York ….. start spreading the news. Broadway and the MET ….. we’re on our way!

We agreed that travelling by train, especially business class, was the best way to do this trip.

Scott called an Uber to take us to Montreal Central Station where we entered from an underground car park. We waited in the Business lounge which was smaller than Toronto’s but more modern with all the same refreshments provided.

The train was one of the newest fleet and was very spacious and comfortable. Coffee and cake were served first. Then the drinks cart arrived and we had the obligatory Bloody Caesars with nibbles.

There were no delays so it was a relaxing trip. Lunch consisted of chicken breast with broccoli, mashed potato and gravy. A beetroot salad and a chocolate cake were also on our trays. Beverages were a choice of water, red or white wine.

Once back at Union Station we were waiting too long for an Uber and it was quite expensive…. which we realised later might be because of the HondaIndy car races. So we walked for a bit and then stopped to have a burger each. Scott had the Vegetable Burger and I chose the Bacon Burger.

We walked past trailers for some Hollywood filming and came across the sign for Law and Order. Apparently Toronto is a popular choice over New York because it has a smaller population and is less hectic.

We thought that maybe catching a tram will help us get back to the apartment. Frustratingly, the trams do not have their own lane and must follow traffic which was very slow so once we got close to Queen Street, we alighted and made better progress on foot.

The weather was spectacular with a light breeze and no evidence of the torrential rain from last Tuesday.

Once home, we could hear the buzz of racing cars and I could see some bleachers in the distance holding spectators for a race we could not see. It was the HondaIndy Event.

We had a quiet night in.

Scott had booked a tour for 10:30am for Habitat 67. It was designed by the Israeli-Canadian architect Moshe Safdie as the Canadian Pavilion for the World Exposition of 1967 and was originally intended as an experimental solution for high-quality housing in dense urban environments. OMG this is my museum visit!

We also found out that Queen Elizabeth II was not allowed to step on Quebec soil as a result of a dispute with the French… so she sailed in on the Royal Britannia and visited the Expo Island…man made and not technically ’Quebec’ and then returned to the yacht for sleep.

Moshe Safdie is also the architect of the Marina Sands in Singapore amongst other iconic buildings across the planet.

The Habitat67 building is on the other side of Port Montreal and an Uber is the most desirable way to get there.

After the tour we Ubered back to the old town and found a Spanish restaurant for lunch. Scott impressed me with his ability to converse in French and we enjoyed a lovely lunch.

We decided to head back to the apartment so I could blog and we could recuperate.

We decided to go to Provigo to top up with some goods for a simple dinner.

Home to relax and prepare for another day of travel back to Toronto.

The apartment was very comfortable to sleep in and the facilities reliable and easy to use.

It was going to be another warm day.

I would like to note that I do not know what Canadian dollars look like because everything is paid for by phone. Here is a graphic!

We tried to walk up to the Chalet but the heat and steady incline got the better of me … so down we went to the main shopping streets of Montreal

All the signs are in French… no English translation but everyone can switch to English!!! We found the Timeout food hall and stopped for a beverage and a rest in the cool. Michele and I first found one of these food halls in Lisbon last year.

Some shopping and more shopping before we decided that today’s lunch will be a Big Mac… the shrinkage is real everywhere!

Onward we wandered some more and then decided to drop our purchases back to the apartment.

Our next destination was up Saint Laurenc to find the Schwartz Deli. Our host explained that you can join the queue to choose what you want or go to the take away next store and order a sandwich and pickle and eat it there. We don’t queue!

Strolling along we found Rue Saint Denis which is a cosmopolitan street with many artistic outlets and small cafes and bars. It is a very vibrant and colourful area.

This led us to the Mount Royale district which was also very eclectic and steeped in local culture.

After completing over 17,000 steps we decided to catch an Uber back to the apartment.

To top up some needed supplies we then walked to the local Provigo, stocked up and made our way home for the night!

We were happy to see that they had Clomato mix and Caesar salt for the rim. Which is how we finished the evening.

Onward to Montreal today.

It was easy to catch an Uber to Union Station and we were pleasantly surprised to see that there was a Business Lounge for VIA trains for us to wait in. Tea and coffee were on offer through machines and fridges were stocked with juices and a range of sodas. Fresh apples were also on the menu.

The lounge was outfitted with leather lounges and chairs with a lovely art deco design.

We boarded at 8:10am and once down the ramp of the lovely station we had priority boarding and sailed past the long queue to go to the Number 1 Carriage. Business class seats are very spacious with a 2 – 1 seat configuration. The attendants are very active with service, helping with luggage, safety briefs and then cake and coffee once we are on our way. The choice of cake (brekky) was cranberry or lemon and beverages included juice, soda or tea and coffee. The cake was too sweet and poor offering for this time of the morning.

At around 10:30, the drinks cart came out again and we noticed that there was Clamato juice and vodka on the trolley …. So Caesar’s were chosen and they were nice and spicy! 🌶️ A savoury snack was also provided.

You can follow the progress of the train through their app which shows you the speed and location and times for each stop. It was a lovely way to travel. The onboard wifi was exceptional!

Once we got to the half way mark at Kingston we were delayed by a police operation… someone was on the tracks and needed to be located. During this stop they served lunch- we chose meatloaf which came with a pickled vegetable salad and a berry crumble, a bun and your choice of beverage – wine for us!

There were more small delays so an announcement came over that half the cost will be credited for a future trip within 12 months.

The fields on each side of the train were very green with potatoes and corn being the dominant crops.

Once we crossed the border, the signage changed to French. It was less rural and the architecture and environment were different.

Apparently there were downpours in Toronto today that caused chaos with traffic, power outages and flooding which we missed due to catching this train.

Once we arrived in Montreal Central Station, it was easy to navigate up to the city and we decided to walk to our accommodation located on Rue Saint-Urbain opposite the university. On the way we found a SAQ store that sells spirits and wines in part of the underground shopping network.

Our Aparthotel is spacious with all the comforts of home plus our own bedroom and bathroom each. Once settled we were ready for the evening meal.

We made our way to the old town in an Uber because it started to rain.

We chose to eat at Gaspars, it had a lovely atmosphere, attentive staff and good quality food. We consumed Caesars, cod fish cakes, octopus with hummus and salsa, filet Mignon for Scott and Beef Cheeks with risotto for me. It was all delicious.

The rain had stopped so we walked the mostly flat 1.6 kilometres to our Aparthotel, collecting supplies from an IGA supermarket on the way. It was warm and humid so the air conditioning in our apartment was much appreciated.
